Four "W" and One "H" to Starting Your Handmade Jewelry Hobby

Once there is a quoted saying "Have something in life that gets you out of yourself ". Have you find something that your really feel passionate? Maybe you find it trough your hobby? Well, as for me. I found my passion in jewelry making hobby. First I only do it as a hobby and now so far I am doing it to gain profit to fund my hobby.

If you're thinking to starting your own Handmade Jewelry making hobby then base on my experience of six years ( 2011 -  2016) in handmade jewelry making, I want to share some beginner tips. I describe it in Four "W" and One "H".

FOUR "W"

1. WHY 
Ask your self why you want to start this hobby? I know is a bit a kind of soul searching.
As Example, for me why I start this hobby is because I found making jewelry is fun and challenging. Fun because I find satisfaction everytime I finihed making one piece of jewelry. Challenging depending on the technique I use or you will use? Do not worry as long as you keep continuing your hobby, you will find what handmade jewelry technique that you like and skill most. As for me I found macrame technique is I like the most. Do not give up easly when you find this hobby is challenging at first. Try to enjoy it and keep doing it.

If you just want to have fun with jewelry making is also one great reason to start this hobby. Why? Because with fun you will not easly get bored instead you will find that you can be very creative with this hobby.  

2. WHERE
Where you want to start it? Well as long you have a bit space where you life it doesnt matter. I start my hobby in my mother in law kitchen table. My tips is if your are beginner, you only need a bit space to start this hobby. Example your working table or bed room table. If you have small children better becareful. Some of jewelry making material can be dangerous if it swallow or cut. Put your jewelry making supply in propper container or cupboard to avoid the accident.

3.WHEN
When you want to start your making jewelry hobby? Depend on each individual. You can start it anytime as long as you have spare time or it can become your full time hobby.

4.WHAT
What you need to start your Jewelry Making hobby? I will making a check list for you. Here it is.

1.Spare time or Full time depend on each indivudual needs.

2.Jewelry making material:

- Beads. Any kind and different size of beads example gemstones, crystals, glass beads, chezh beads, resin beads, organic beads, arcrylics beads, etc.ture

- Charms. Charms usually use for embelished your jewelry. They came in many type and meaning.

- Jewelry Finding. Example Claps, link connector, earring finding, beads caps, jump ring, spacer etc.

- Stringing material. Beading thread, craft wire, cord, chains, elastic cord and beading wire.

Elastic Cord

- Tools. Pliers, needles, mandrels, gauges, loom and etc. But if you just starting making jewelry, you will need pliers. Other tools can follow as you learn the technique in jewelry making.

5.HOW. To know more about jewelry making, what you can do is...
a. You can learn by your self (self taught) by reading books about jewelry making.
b. Take free lesson online with watching jewelry making tutorial on YOUTUBE, Pinterest and jewelry making website ( you Google it).
c.Enter online course, like London Jewelry School.
d. Find jewelry making course or workshop in your town. I ussually find the info from Facebook. Now there are alot of jewelry making group on facebook whose one or two of the member are profesional jewelry designer who had their regular workshop classes. They ussually will gift you info about it.
e.If you are interested to make your hobby to become business, you also can start to find information about it. You can find it throught workshop or online classes in jewelry making business topic.
